5 questions that make you attractive as a professional

Whether you’re interviewing or you're having a coffee chat, I believe questions show your depth and knowledge of where the conversation or business is headed. Below are a few of my favorites to build trust, become attractive, and win the opportunity.

1) What do you wish more people knew about your career story and why?

My goal in any conversation is to ask the kind of question someone wishes their own family would ask. Most people rarely get to reflect out loud. This question unlocks that moment.

2) What’s the last win the team celebrated together?

“Your boos mean nothing. I’ve seen what makes you cheer”, a classic from Rick & Morty. Why join a team that you wouldn’t want to celebrate with? This always makes the hiring team stop for a second.

3) How have you managed to chase down projects you enjoy and meet expectations for the role?

This one travels well, you can reuse it later in the process:

“Hey, I noticed [person] got to do X. How has the team supported them?”

It reveals what this person values—and what the culture supports.

4) When was the last time you made a mistake or received feedback? How’d you address it?

People fail. The goal here is to see if they can admit it, don’t hang around people who can’t.

5) What’s a common misconception from folks in this role and for the industry overall?

Get the 10,000 ft view of the business. What do they care about? Where do they want you to spend time?

Be honest about the reason you’re reaching out to someone. Whether it’s a problem you can solve, a genuine interest, or you were told they’d be a good person to connect with.

People are starting to crave the truth; give it to them!

One question about the “game”

You are playing a game in life. I’ve loved this frame. Try these out:

  • Am I playing the game I chose or the one I inherited?

  • Do I like who I’m becoming by playing this game?

  • Is this game leading somewhere I want to be in 3-5 years?

Before you leave…

This is the work I’m currently doing with others.
