unhappy?

Finding work you love is ironic—it rarely looks pretty, feels easy, or happens when you expect it.

You’re reading this on a Saturday morning. Carve some part of today or tomorrow out for you. I’m doing it right now, and I’ve never felt more on fire.

Here’s why 👇🏼

  1. Finding work you enjoy

  2. Questions to attract people

  3. #PrescribedByDx - raw thoughts

BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front)

  • Prioritize people to get out of the brutal period.

  • Questions can attract people + opportunities.

  • Find someone whose craft you appreciate.

Finding work you love is ironic—it rarely looks pretty, feels easy, or happens when you expect it.

I spent a year working in my parent’s basement.

Then 1.5 years in a windowless downtown Cleveland apartment.

Doing work I was good at—but didn’t love.

For 2.5 years, I accepted it as a rite of passage. That’s what it takes to work at the #1 professional services firm, right?

But eventually, I needed change.

So I focused on people:

  • Who was doing “cool” work?

  • Who did I enjoy talking to?

  • Where could I grow, travel, and gain exposure?

I prioritized the answers from those conversations.

2.5 years later, I exceeded my expectations.

But I can’t forget those first 2.5 years—grinding, doubting, and working hard just to say I was working hard.

Yet, without them:

  • I wouldn’t love my work as much.

  • I wouldn’t provide for my family the way I do.

  • I wouldn’t know how to sell myself or build a business.

So if you’re in the tough season right now, ask the hard questions—and ruthlessly prioritize the answers.

Show up consistently for a year. Things will start to change.

Questions to attract people…

  • Who’s surprised you recently?

  • What do you wish you would’ve considered before X?

  • What personal life habit do you owe success to?

  • Where should more people spend time in your opinion?

  • How often do people not understand the work you do?

  • What’s a pain point of the company people don’t realize?

I got back from a Hans Zimmer show an hour ago. Unbelievable. From Lion King to Interstellar, James Bond to The Dark Knight, and Interstellar again. It was unbelievable to sit in for 2 hours and simply listen.

I love it when he pointed out that he was a film composer and didn’t do large crowds as he speaks to 10k+ people. He said when he’s up there, he tries to treat it like a dinner- hanging out, chatting with friends, and jamming out.

We should consider where we feel that level of comfort.

Might be somewhere to spend more of our day 🤝
