I had a Saturday coaching session last week (which I absolutely love) where we dove into the active referrals or “advocates” that this person had rooting for them.
Among awesome companies, Coca-Cola became our focus for a minute.
“I have an awesome referral over there and had a chat, but there’s no open role that I like and it doesn’t seem like they sponsor from the website”
Two questions pop into my head:
Who can we get connected with?
Have they sponsored roles this past year?
Answers? Supply chain leaders and yes, they have.
I wanted to break this down because often we have amazing people in our corner but we don’t ask the next question to unlock a new connection. We run straight to the job board, don’t see a role, and then we believe there’s no introduction to be made.
Here are a few questions you can ask your referral:
Do you know anyone from that group (your role) you’d recommend I reach out to from what you can see on the org structure?
Is there a recruiter/talent team member you’ve loved working with?
Have you been involved in interviewing candidates for your team?
Are there any introductions at the company you’re open to making?
Why? More information to act on.
They don’t have to own the outreach or even go to bat for you, a name is sometimes all you need to open a door.
