Stuck Outside the Interview Room?

How to find your advocates, gather intel, and finally make your pivot happen.

There are conversations we simply have been avoiding. Below are small steps that you can take (10% effort) to show up better tomorrow. Let’s get into it 👇🏼

  1. Foundation of a Career Pivot

  2. Questions to generate valuable work

Pivoting careers feels impossible—until you spend time with the people already doing the work

There’s nothing easy about selling yourself when you can’t even break into an interview room. So, where do you go? You work relentlessly to land conversations with people living the life you want. Once you get to them - it starts to become simple:

Information + Potential Advocate + Analysis + Iteration = Foundation of a Pivot

How can we expect to transfer industries and audiences without the right information? Here are a few questions that fuel a solid career pivot:

Career Pivot Questions

1. What’s a pain point in this industry that most don’t consider?

2. What’s the last win the team celebrated?

3. What technical background do most people lean back on here?

4. Who did you spend the most time with early on?

5. What do you wish you would’ve considered about this role?

6. How have you created advocates of your career story?

7. How is performance measured?

8. Can you give me an example of a good client/customer experience?

9. What are exit opportunities from this role?

10. Who is the main competition in the industry?

Ps) The person answering should live the life you want to live

These questions aren’t easy to ask, but they’ll help build a relationship that most don’t have. It’s why they aren’t easy. Your goal isn’t to have one conversation and then never talk again.

The goal is to find advocates and get information every single day of the week.

Questions for our career going the way we want…

  • What if it went the way I wanted?

  • Who do I spend more time with for new ideas?

  • What room do I wish I was allowed in? Have I asked?

  • Who has gone to bat for me recently? Who will need to soon?

Don’t miss a moment to step away from it all.

Over the last year, I’ve become comfortable with having no balance. I don’t even prioritize it anymore. Sure, I am still upset when I’m not able to show up in person with friends or be there for someone—but you simply can’t balance it all.

There are seasons to it; I’d rather honor the seasons. Here’s a snap from a slower period of life ✌🏼

TL;DR

  • You don’t need balance in your 20s

  • “What if..” + action on good information = fulfilling wins

  • A pivot starts with enough information to ask great questions

Before you leave…

If you’ve enjoyed this, send it over to another professional. The goal is to equip people to build a career they enjoy showing up to!

I’m excited to hear about the questions you’re asking.
