How to project director-level presence (without faking experience).

I don’t believe you need a specific title to win the role.

Here are a few reminders I shared with a job seeker this week 👇🏼

You don’t need the title to think like a director.

Found a role that’s a stretch? Or, maybe it’s not a stretch but you don’t have this role level on your resume yet? Chief, director, manager, etc.

Who knows - this list goes on these days! Well, good news… you don’t need that title to go win the role. Does it help? Sure. Are you going to need to work harder than someone with that title? Yes.

What can this work look like?

1) Shift from tasks to “strategy”

You’re not here as an individual contributor anymore. You’re also not here to lie; speak to the systems that you helped build, which contributed to the overall strategy in your last role. The aim is to connect the dots between the team and departments vs. the individual work - who did you bring into the room?

Less specific steps, more of the 10k foot view.

2) Take a shot at their vision.

Speak to where you see them moving in the next 3-6 months with this role. Why are they going after it? What’s going to change once they have it? And, who would you bring together if you were in the role?

You speak to the vision of the organization and the pain point that the role will solve.

What behaviors do you need to change?

1) Executive Presence

How? Pause before you speak. Use “we” to describe projects. Focus on measured, outcome-oriented statements.

2) Curiosity > Compliance

How? Ask questions that show you own the outcome. Not obedience to the process.

  • What does success look like for you, and what makes it hard to measure?

  • Where does this role plug into decisions versus delivery?

You don’t need the title first.
You just need to think, speak, and act like the person who already deserves it.

Question to write on your mirror (measure progress)

Out of the last 14 days, when was the last time I spoke with someone who is in the role I want to be in?

Two thoughts for your day…

“Everyone’s optimizing for the ATS in the job search. Almost no one’s writing for the human.”

“Your comments on LinkedIn tell me more about your job search than your resume ever will.”

Before you leave…

You don’t have to do this search alone.
