Platforms show you the opportunity. People create the path to it.

Let’s get into it 👇🏼

The job board showed the opening. The people around it showed the path.

I love job boards. Let’s not get this confused. It’s one of the best places to understand what is happening in your market. It’s ALSO why I’ve started to highlight a couple of roles in my newsletter.

Visit job board > research your lane > view # of opportunities

The key step in the last part is understanding the # of opportunities that you’d actually consider. If they are there (maybe you’re also wiling to move and that creates more options) then you’re in the right arena. Now it’s time to build the path to the role.

Your competition, immediately runs towards the application to start laying bricks for their path. In this market, if you’re not there in 48 hours… it can be wasted effort.

Here’s where I’d start gathering + building bricks; people.

1) Research the role “AND hiring” or “AND [company name]” on the LinkedIn search bar. From there you can understand if people are talking about the role you want.

2) Who sits in the exact role at the company? Or, extremely close to it? Here you are going after operators that know the work inside and out.

3) Who might be part of the talent team recruiting for it?

All of this can be found from LinkedIn and each bullet above is focused on the people. This is consistently generating interviews and creating offers for the people I’m working with.

Just this week from clients: United Nations, Deloitte, OpenAI, UCSD (Healthcare), Palantir, Google, and SalesForce.

Don’t be afraid to send the message, the people are waiting to hear from you.

Quick note:

When you’re about to submit an applications, ask yourself:

  • Can I get a referral in 48 hours? If not, go to the next question.

  • Did I catch the role within 72 hours of it opening? If yes, go ahead and apply (referral or not)

  • Who are 3-5 people I can contact around the role?

One question for your next interview:

Ask the hiring team: “What was the last win the team celebrated?”

They will be surprised. Tells you more about them and their “culture”.

Before you leave…

Quick poll:

Rooting for you 🤝
