I reviewed 1,000 resumes, most made this critical mistake.

Everyone’s optimizing for the ATS. Almost no one’s writing for the human.

You don’t need more keywords - you need more connection.
Let’s make your resume sound like a real person again

The Resume Is Easy. The Story Is Hard.

Last week in my newsletter, I focused on the foundation of a good resume. The top 1/3 of that document is prime real estate. The hiring team opens it up and immediately is reminded who you are, what you’re associated with, and what you’ve accomplished.

Few folks get this foundation and instead hit home with a wall of text.

The internal war with a resume often never stops. So, let’s reframe it.

You’re not writing a resume. You’re writing a trailer.

People try to write an encyclopedia when hiring managers only want a movie trailer - fast, emotional, and hinting at impact.

How do you know what’s impact? Try this:

  • What will this role solve?

  • What does the business need?

  • How does this connect to their current events?

  • How am I different than all the other candidates applying?

If you’re struggling with your resume, step into the above activity. The goal is to take one bullet at a time and turn it into a movie trailer line.

You gain confidence. You focus on them.

You become remembered.

Note: You already have the story. You just need to tell it like someone who believes in the ending.

Questions to research your target company/role

  1. What do I want to solve after reading this job description?

  2. What don’t most people realize about this problem?

  3. What do I foresee coming for this industry in 6 months?

I launched my project for the next year. It’s nothing new; I’ve talked about it for the last 5 years, almost every single day. I’ll be obsessing over helping people build a career they love for the next 365 days.

Have a day!

Ps… I’m thinking about trying this out, thought I’d share.

Busy isn’t the goal

Wing turns busy days into real progress. A full-time virtual assistant runs calendars, inboxes, and follow-ups, removing the drag that burns leaders out.

The result: more focus, more output, and the headspace to lead.
