I lost myself in a rant to you

I want you to win professionally, but not for a moment. Forever.

A few beliefs I had after speaking with people today, the goal is to spark momentum and fire and something beautiful in your week 👇🏼

I wanted to rant. It’ll help your professional life.

This is the longer form of my LinkedIn post, and maybe even more raw than the video?

1) Go get real feedback

I see it all the time. I saw it at the #1 professional services firm in the world, and I see it running my own business today. Everyone is too scared to admit where they went wrong. But you messed up, you’re in a shitty situation, and things aren’t looking too great - so where do you go?

Instead of listening to every voice on the internet or what your parents had planned for you in this life, try this:

Bend the knee. Go to people in front of you who know your story and who live the life you want to live. Ask questions. Do step #2. And, take action.

“No one will hate on you from above.”

Ps… if you haven’t developed a person like this in your life, that’s fine… but skip to step #2.

2) Admit it.

You are avoiding making friends. You didn’t invest in relationships. You did something wrong and didn’t admit it. You didn’t work hard enough. You didn’t smile enough. You never laughed. You never told someone you loved what they do and how they show up. You never took this risk. You never tried to “make it work”. You sat idle. You watched others soar.

I couldn't care less about what you did.

But my one wish is that you “admit it”

I’m not where I want to be, and it’s time to get around people who are.

3) No one knows who you are.

This could be nestled right under “admit it” but it’s worth taking inventory of where you’re known and what your known for.

If you look around your domain (immediate community)… who knows you? What organizations have you spent time at? What groups of people online recognize you?

Frankly, I don’t care if it’s online or in-person. I believe in-person helps you grow faster, but the point here is that I want you to put out an idea. Something you wholeheartedly believe in and could focus on consistently.

Share it with others. Ask a question. Leave a comment.

It pays to be known in your small corner of the world.

Questions I asked another human being today…

  • If your last interview was a rehearsal, what’s one behavior you’d dial up and one you’d dial down?

  • What’s one piece of feedback you’ve gotten (explicitly or subtly) that you haven’t fully sat with yet?
