Endless applications are a giant scam

The way we've been taught to job search historically is wrong. We've built a standard that focuses on the amount of reps you can put in and not the real work; connecting with people and roles that matter to us.

I don’t blame you. I blame a job searching process that continues to create stress, anxiety, and angst towards the work that you do.

I believe applications are a scam, below is how a job seeker is leaving them behind…

Job search success isn’t about templates—it’s about turning small conversations into big opportunities

This past week I broke down a day in the life if you had 2-3 hours to dive into job searching. There isn’t one part of that video that calls for you to apply…

What do I wish more people would understand from this video?

Definition of your target role.

As you work through this - don’t listen to what other people think you should do. You have to be realistic about your experience and technical skills. But if you listen to your parents and friends right off the bat, you’re setting yourself up to follow a career that they want for you. Spend time alone upfront!

Researching people to connect with.

Don’t make this any deeper than it needs to be. Go back to my previous issues; I've given you templates and questions (more below) to ask people you already know. There is someone close to you doing the work you want to do; leave no stone unturned.

There’s little about the job search that is pretty.

I’ve had “fun” when I’m speaking with the people in the role I want. But that’s because it’s a glimmer of what life could be like on the other side. Therefore, you must relentlessly pursue time with these people if you want to keep building momentum in your search. This was never supposed to be pretty; level set on that from the start.

Questions to make people stop…

  • Who’s been pivotal in your career that you didn't expect?

  • What do you wish more people knew about this role?

  • Which project surprised you the most last, and why?

  • Where have past professionals slipped up?

Get outside. Move your body. And then get back to the hustle.

Whether that’s job searching, scheduling the annual performance review, or putting in your 2-weeks to go chase your dream.

I still continuously get shocked about what a good workout can do for your head.

Soul Cycle ATX - yes, I’m part of the cult occassionally

TL;DR

  • Use a sweat to reset your day

  • People win more than applications

  • This was never suppose to be pretty

Before you leave…
