Job search or career-focused insight
Example of what’s working for clients and job seekers I’ve met
What is going on personally & professionally?
1. Job search or career-focused insight.
Conversations > Applications is what I preach on a daily basis. But I think most job seekers make one pivotal mistake when reading my content…
Assuming that you’re supposed to land an opportunity from every conversation.
What do you gain from these conversations almost every single time?
Confidence
You’ll get one of the following outcomes…
Outcome #1: Realization that this person isn’t deep at all.
We are so good at putting people on pedestals right off the bat. We see millions of followers, unbreakable sales funnels, and a crazy audience. We rarely think about how they’re a human and often share the same wins, losses, and thoughts that we do.
If you speak with them, you may just realize that the work they do isn’t hard at all.
Expectations are reset and you gain confidence.
Outcome #2: The person will drop their ego and you’ll learn 10x.
People love to talk about themselves. But are they willing to tell you the truth? I believe you can pick up on this in the first 10 minutes.
Outcome #2 is my favorite because you get a chance to learn more than any job description would ever tell you. These people will unveil the curtain and help you understand the best way to approach the role opening or even the work in general.
Yet again, expectations are rest and you gain confidence.
What else should you consider?
There may be a cutoff where you don’t need any more information from people in the role that you want. The next step is simply for you to go take action on all the information they gave you, this may look like this:
Project or deck showing what pain points you would solve in that role.
Applying to a specific position that they referenced.
Figuring out what stories you’ll tie to the information you now have.
2. One example of what's working for my clients and job seekers I've met...
Finding roles on LinkedIn that are being posted by hiring teams.
It’s so easy to get lost on the job boards. A few job seekers have had success finding posts that are announcing the opening or soon-to-be opening that the hiring team is looking to recruit.
Why is this different and what do you need to take into account?
You now will usually have immediate access to who is part of the hiring team and what team members are involved with the role by viewing the post. Additionally, speed wins here. I’m a big fan of speed being crucial in the job search and this is another reminder of you needing to stay ready.
Question for you in the job search:
What job search habit has provided zero value yet is done daily?
TL;DR
Conversations > Applications is really about gaining confidence.
Speed wins in the job search more often than not.
We put people on a pedestal way too fast.
3. What I'm up to that month personally and professionally
Personally - This week I’m up against a pretty big physical challenge, I’ll be competing in the Ironman 70.3 out in Tempe, AZ. Super excited and just another opportunity to travel + see what my body can handle! Also fortunate to have my family out there supporting me while I race! After that, I’m headed up to Seattle to see the city and watch my beloved Cleveland Browns play the Seahawks. Had the chance to spend 2 weeks at home prior to all the travel so running into it well-rested!
Professionally - You have to spend time with the people that you serve, if you don’t I’m convinced that you’re missing out on business ideas, new connections, and helping your clients win endlessly. Job seekers are definitely struggling and it’s been good to jump on the phone to hear more about their journey. Unfortunately, there isn’t a magic pill right now - the seekers who are winning have found a way to show up consistently and use rejections as fuel.
Outside of spending much more time with job seekers, I’ve been finding a way to carve out more time for writing and balancing it all with my personal life.
I appreciate you taking the time to read this far! Have a day and respond here if you have any questions!
