“Going back to the drawing board…”
Hey! Hope the morning is off to a good start.
Below you’ll find…
Career Focused Insight.
Example of what’s working for job seekers.
What I’m doing personally & professionally.

“It’s okay to go back to the drawing board”
You’re going to find moments of growth, fun, and power in your career. And 100% of the time, life is good at making sure those moments don’t last forever. I’ve noticed that even my most successful clients still face challenges in their careers months later. I also face them myself.
No one truly has it all figured out or is experiencing infinite bliss in their career.
Let’s break down what going back to the drawing board can look like…
Option #1: Spending time alone evaluating what happened.
Did you run into a specific issue, or event, or just realized this wasn’t where you wanted to be?
Cool. Spending time alone away from distractions and other people’s opinions is one of the best ways to get the ball rolling in the “figuring it out” department.
This could be you using a physical whiteboard or journaling to answer questions such as:
Where did I feel the most pain? What did I want to change?
Who am I around when I feel pushed to chase my dreams?
What moments have I had the most energy recently?
Option #2: Speaking with people who have been where you want to be.
There isn’t another qualification that I would demand you consider when getting around other people to figure out what your drawing board needs to look like.
I’d recommend blocking out all other opinions if you want to get to the end goal faster.
What will these conversations do for you?
Open your eyes to where you may have gone wrong with actual feedback
Remind you that what you want is possible - those people aren’t that deep.
Help your work smarter. They didn’t get to the pinnacle wasting resources.
What else should you consider?
People are good at putting their limitations on you.
Going back to the drawing board looks different for everyone.
You’re one conversation away from unlocking a new opportunity.
There exists pain that is good for your career. It may mean you’re doing the right thing.
2. Example of what’s working for job seekers
The advice, “Go On”
I believe often we’re addicted to the next shiny object when job searching. Chat GPT, new resume templates, and invent new strategies we saw on LinkedIn yesterday.
But ask yourself these questions; When was the last time you interviewed? How often have you over the last 2 months? What round are you making it to?
If it’s 4 or more times into the late stages, then the “Go On” advice directly applies to you.
I’ve run into amazing job seekers who are questioning every single move. Continue to ask for feedback after interviews, continue to spend as much time as possible preparing, and continue to create as many options as possible.
You’re landing interviews and are getting close. Just keep stepping up and swinging the bat.
Question for you in your career…
“When did you last detach from a moment and say, “Dang this is fun. I’m really happy here”?”
TL;DR
It’s okay to step back and revisit the path that you’re headed down.
People generally want to help others. Find your tribe and run.
You don’t need a new tool, you just need to keep showing up.
3. What I'm up to that month personally and professionally
Personally - back on the road! I’ve spent time in Phoenix, Austin, San Antonio, and Knoxville. This week I’m headed to NYC for the US Open and Columbus for a wedding with family. All this travel is fun and fits into my life right now. But there are challenges. I’ve been considering how it’s changed my life and also realizing that this is exactly what I want to do right now. It’s also perfectly acceptable that others don’t want to do that - though their comments can be annoying, we push forward.
Professionally - I’ve found myself holding calls with awesome job seekers who don’t need a coach. The bottom line, not everyone needs a coach to change their job search. Many job seekers are doing all the right things and will be perfectly aligned when the market changes or will land a role very soon. Outside of that, it’s been normal programming! Content, coaching, and more content. I’ve expanded to Twitter which has been a bit more fun and easier to let hotter takes go!
