What career breakthroughs really take: quotes from job seekers this week

The conversations I’ve had this week are shaping what I’m building next to help you land $100K roles.

The last time you heard from me was 11/26. I’ve been wholeheartedly focused on enjoying time with family, closing out a year-end audit client, and building a 5-day email series for you to land $100K roles where ideas are heard, work is valued, and people advocate for you behind closed doors.

Let’s get into it 👇🏼

  2. Questions that we’re avoiding

Real words, real struggles: 2 job seeker quotes from this week

I pride myself on spending time with job seekers. This is why I’ve loved building a coaching business, for right now I’m able to spend selective time 1:1 with like-minded professionals looking for a breakthrough in their career.

With that, the moments we spend together aren’t all fun. They’re consistently raw.

Here are a few quotes that hit home this week:

“I thought I’d be golden with an MBA and PMP”

Remember when you set out for that certification and thought once you nailed it, your career would be figured out?

Try again.

It’s a reminder that your career is the “long game”. A certification isn’t going to magically change it into something you love or are successful in overnight. There are conversations, sweat equity, and time spent finding the right people to build with.

Don’t try to avoid the deep work with a certification or new course.

Run towards questions you’re avoiding.

“You’ll need to dumb it down for them”

My client and I laughed at this. The feedback was directed at someone who had put their career together in a beautiful fashion. A high-powered executive looking for a change in the industry.

While we laughed, there was a balance between bringing curiosity and your expertise to the conversation. Striking this balance isn’t for the faint of heart or something that is done right off the bat.

A way to combat this? Ask questions you care about and ask questions that “seek to understand” vs. knowing the answer already.

Questions that we’re avoiding…

  • Where could my current role give me more exposure?

  • What feedback have I not implemented recently?

  • How would I sell my candidacy?

  • What do I bring to the table?

Don’t take yourself too seriously. I had a ton of fun this past Thanksgiving with family and friends; even got to cross into Mexico for the afternoon!

I wish more people realized what hanging around people who don’t come from where you grew up could do. New people, new traditions, new conversations, and the list goes on.

Friendly reminder to go join that group you’ve been looking at 😉

Nuevo Progresso Mexico

TL;DR

  • You’ll never fall short of noise in the job search—only action.

  • Be a student in a new environment more often

  • There are difficult questions we’re avoiding.

Before you leave…

If you’ve enjoyed this, send it over to another professional. The goal is to equip people to build a career they enjoy showing up to!

I’m excited to hear about the questions you’re asking.

P.S. When you’re ready to tap back into your network, check out this new 5-day email series I launched to land $100K roles where ideas are heard, work is valued, and people advocate for you behind closed doors.

I teach the exact framework I use to help job seekers attract hiring teams and show up to a career that they enjoy.
