The Stalled Calls šŸ“ž

Feel like your calls go nowhere? My conversation template sparks engagement + 3 closing questions you’ll want to use

Welcome to #PrescribedByDx!

We tend to overthink the first step in starting a conversation. We don’t realize a few steps we could take to generate a call and benefit someone’s career in 3-5 sentences.

Ps) If you’ve recently joined us, I’m glad to have you. Respond and let me know what you’re up to, I’d love to hear!

My go-to method for sparking old conversations—leave this type of recommendation today

I love heading over to someone’s LinkedIn profile and instead of looking at their ā€œreceivedā€ recommendations, I look at the ones they’ve ā€œgivenā€. Often this tells me more about a person šŸ˜‰

Giving a recommendation immediately sparks a fire. This fire can lead to a conversation, a new business idea, a fresh opportunity, or a needed pleasant moment in your career.

Here’s a template for building a powerful recommendation for an old colleague šŸ‘‡šŸ¼

[Name] is the person you want on your team. A [trait or skill] who leverages [specific expertise] and excels at [related strength]. [Name] knows exactly when to bring [key people] into important discussions and when to [action], whether that's [their expertise] or [ask questions].

I've always valued the [insight or perspective] [Name] offers, and I highly recommend [Name] for any team. You won’t regret adding [pronoun] to your organization!

Use this template to get started, but don’t let it drive everything you say here. You’ve lived the stories out with this person, share where they set on fire. Who knows - you may even remind them of a moment they forgot. This could change their trajectory and yours at the same time šŸ¤

Questions for Momentum Moments

ā€œIf you were in my shoes, what would you be doing to show up 10% better in [area of expertise or focus]?ā€

  • You want action coming out of this call - here’s a place where you can refine your skills and then make sure you're speaking to this gap (as if you’ve learned it already) when you head into interviews.

ā€œWho do you recommend I connect with after this call?ā€

  • Let’s make sure this isn’t your last conversation with industry pros - this is also a good gauge of how you performed on the call. If you perform well, they’ll most likely refer you to a close contact or someone who can open a door.

ā€œWhat’s one idea in [this line of work/role] that you believe I haven’t explored yet? How would it change my trajectory?ā€

  • I don’t believe we give enough value to how a conversation can change your trajectory. And even a 1% change, could put you on the opposite side of the world (in a good way).

As you come to a close with the conversation, don’t miss a moment to get an action step. The person on the other end will appreciate that you’re taking the initiative and then you’ll have an opportunity to follow up with the progress that you’ve made.

Ps) Talk to people that you genuinely find interesting, goes much better.
