The Plan That Returned Nothin

I believed in my job search plan—until it left me with nothing. Here’s what I wish I’d done differently.

Welcome to #PrescribedByDx

If we’re willing to sit down with ourselves and address what’s happening in the market and our expectations for the next step in our career, I believe the range of options can be pretty sweet.

Take a read below (no more than 4 minutes) as I break this down.

Below you’ll find…

  1. The Market & Expectations

  2. Questions to hear yourself

  3. #PrescribedByDx - Life Updates

If your job search isn’t working, it’s because you’re missing this essential alignment between the market and your expectations

  1. The Market

I was discussing this with a job seeker recently who told me they were interested in “project management in the tech space”. Well, if you’ve been following recent market/labor news - how does that shape up right now?

We’ve seen 60k+ layoffs in that arena. Should that be the target right now?

Most likely not. Adjust accordingly.

  1. Expectations

A year ago you expected recruiters to chase you down and your resume to break open an opportunity with most of the roles you went after. Unfortunately, that’s not where we’re at right now.

Reviewing the job descriptions and level setting on what they need for the role is where you need to start. Set your expectations off on the analysis of the skills you bring to the table and what the role requires.

Be honest about the gap now, or sit in a rut for 6 months before someone tells you.

Balance both of these if you’re looking to scale opportunities because the journey becomes 10x easier if you know both of these upfront.

All of sudden - it’s you, your voice, expectations, market knowledge, and all the opportunities you want to chase down to fight the good fight.

It’s a beautiful thing if you do the work early.

Ps) I love level setting my expectations before I set out to accomplish a goal. Relying on the, “I knew this would be difficult” is empowering and helps me push towards the finish line.

Questions I'd ask to make sure I’m listening to myself…

  • When was the last time I got to do work that I enjoyed?

  • When did I last reflect on what’s been going well?

  • Who do I wish I was spending more time with?

  • What have I enjoyed listening to or reading about recently?

  • How can I start to implement a change I’ve been wanting to make?

I’m convinced most of our goals can become clear if we’re willing to obtain the right information and spend time alone plotting that goal. Grab a piece of paper, put on the beats, and spend time alone answering a few ✌🏼

This upcoming weekend I have a challenge I haven’t faced in a while, a full marathon. I did one before with friends and it was a ton of fun. This time, it’ll be a solo journey in Bali. Taking a second to s/o the people who believed in me (and gave me this hat).

I’ll never regret the time I’ve spent with good people. Making others laugh, sharing an idea, asking a question, or sitting with them when times are tough. That’s life and it creates deep relationships that we cherish forever (most of the time).

So, next time you’re hanging out with friends - let them know how much it means to you. There are people out there who would do anything to have a circle of friends like you do.

Find people who believe in you

TL;DR

  • Before you start, adjust expectations accordingly

  • Be honest about the gap or sit in a rut for 6 months

  • People help you go further than you ever imagined

Before you go…

Could you “reply” and share what you’re currently working on?

I’d love to hear from you.

Dominic
