The dreadful "OpenToWork" Post
I see this on my timeline all the time, here's how you can be different...

The job search is full of low-effort activities that we believe are going to pay off in a massive way. I want to break down one where you can show up differently than your competition 👇🏼
The #OpenToWork Post on LinkedIn
No one wants to do this. People live in fear of the green banner, let alone posting about their unemployment or pivot on the internet for everyone to see.
Because now it’s not only them; their family, friends, and coworkers are involved in the game as well (which is a win, but hard to admit).
Most people default to the below examples (bear with me, we’re deep diving)…

Default #OpenToWork post
So, for the above, you’ll notice the cute emojis LinkedIn gives you and the space above. You can let this fly in under 5 minutes and even use their suggested text (which this user didn’t):
Hi everyone - I am looking for a new role and would appreciate your support. Thank you in advance for any connections, advice, or opportunities you can offer. #OpenToWork
S/o Allison Doyle… she broke this down as well.
But now you have to ask, what does this get me? A few likes? 1 repost? No one knows where I’ve been, what I specifically want to do next, and what people in my network already know me to be. Therefore, people aren’t able to help you.
Next up, we get better…

2nd best in this post
Ahhh… they used the suggested text. But what’s even better here? Someone was willing to vouch for them. Yes, this is an “okay” time to reach out to a friend, mentor, or old colleague and ask them to repost or share this with folks in their network.
6/10 for effort here. The shame is that this professional probably has amazing stories if they’re going after a COO role. Why not give the audience a glimpse into this action?
Okay… one more, and I believe this is an 8/10!

Look at the reactions…
Why an 8/10? Well, they were honest, told you what they did for a living and how things had changed, and also put on display what they’ve done to help themselves in the meantime.
I got connected with this person only because I saw a follow-up post sharing how grateful they were for this post. It opened up conversations, ideas, and new paths.
So, what would have made it a 10/10? Answer why you’re the “one”.
Why should my team take a chance on you? Send some accomplishments in this post; a few are showing up and building charisma around their candidacy.
Ps… It’s easier to help someone who helps themselves.
Bonus: Make sure you open this post to the whole world with your privacy settings. I spend too much time trying to make sure people let me comment for reach on it!
Questions to build your #OpenToWork post…
What audience do I want to see this? Industry, role title, etc.
What is something that few people are talking about in my lane?
How can I show that I’ve invested in myself to be known in my domain?
What accomplishment supports the work I want to do next?

Found this hack from a fellow LinkedIn Creator for Google Sheets
=AI('prompt', [range])Maybe I was behind on the game, but this is pretty cool and helpful.
These are the folks I’m working with, s/o to a select few on LinkedIn - we got a couple referrals this week for the roles.
Senior Backend Engineer (Global Hiring Required)
Social Media Manager / Digital Communications Director
Healthcare Program Manager / Project Management
Technical Program Manager (TPM) / Data Scientist
Before you leave…
I went to an in-person job seeker meetup this week in Austin. Great people, but few knew how to sell their story or pull out someone’s network to help them. Need help doing this?
