Purpose of a Target Role List
Questions for reflection
#PrescribedByDx… travel update
Why a well-defined target role list is crucial for accelerating your career path (and how to build one today)…
Unsure which roles fit your skills? Not seeing results with your applications? Finding it hard to stay focused?
Imagine Knowing Exactly Where to Aim:
You have a well-defined list of target roles.
Your strengths and skills are clearly outlined.
Your resume is tailored and stands out to recruiters.
You have a focused and efficient job search strategy.
How To Craft Your Target Role List:
Estimate where you fall in the market.
After reviewing the roles out there, where do you meet 100% of the requirements? Where do you meet 60% of them? Pull this together with about 20 roles as data for you to operate off of.
Market test as fast as possible.
If you have already, it'll make creating #1 easier - this step simply requires you to apply for jobs. The easiest part of the job search. Apply, monitor results, and update the list from the percentage buckets above.
Understand your business case.
What story sells the most for you as a candidate? Does it apply to this role? As you review your buckets with roles in each above, consider that story and others.
How do you feel? This is a gut check to see if you're list is accurate, you should feel confident in going to battle for roles on the list.
Print it out and hang it up.
There isn't any magic trick with this list. You need to see these roles every single day and understand the progress you made around each.
Give yourself space to write notes, cross roles off, and comment on what works. This is the most pivotal step that job seekers skip.
Understand that the approach to each of these roles is a whole different story.
The steps above should take you at max about 3 hours (inclusive of measuring results). Don't trip up here, get this list printed quickly - it'll help you iterate and move faster than your competition.
Questions to reflect on…
Am I moving fast enough in the job search?
What job descriptions do I enjoy reading the most?
What requirements do I feel I continuously fall short on?
Who would be able to help me understand the role further?
Where could I take a step to come across as a better candidate?

Spent the last two weeks being a student of the game at 38k feet in Papua Indonesia. An unreal experience where I had the chance to head into an underground mine, meet new professionals, and ask questions I needed the answers to!
Don’t let anyone tell you a full-time role can’t be “cool”. Mine has blown my expectations out of the water! Headed back to Jakarta to get settled into my long-term apartment ✌🏼

Minutes before heading underground…
TL;DR
Print out your target role list and hang it up
Test your resume as fast as possible
Being a student is still “cool”
Consider moving faster
