Stretch Conversations: Unlocking Career Opportunities You Can’t See Yet

Why conversations with the right people are the key to advancing faster than your peers

I’ve lived across the globe, coached senior leaders, and built a coaching brand. None of these could have been done by studying people at the peer level. I had to go talk to people who were way ahead of me, here’s the approach…

Below you’ll find —

  1. Purpose of “Stretch” Conversations

  2. Questions to focus on the right skills required

  3. #PrescribedByDx - Raw Thoughts

If you’re not having stretch conversations, you’re missing out on the biggest career leverage point

People have been hooked on what I called “stretch” conversations a few weeks ago. This isn’t a novel or brand new concept, it’s what the best have been doing for centuries - studying the “greats” that came before them.

The idea in my head has always been…

“I want to live that life. I don’t have the resources to do so right now. How can I go get information to kickstart this journey of building that life?”

- Myself?

And, when you come from the “angle of information” - people are attracted to you. Enjoy - you’re now what they call, “charismatic”. Because information should always be the goal. When it is, people will lean in to pick you up when they’ve seen you help yourself.

I say “enjoy” because now you can start to build an army of advocates who are willing to vouch for you where others weren’t. New doors are unlocked, your trajectory changes 10%, and with 6 months of speaking with the right people - you’ll become more pleasant & confident about that trajectory.

Ps) people want to be around those that are pleasant & confident

Questions for understanding the “right” skill required…

What did you do almost every single day that most people don’t realize?”

  • This person lives the life you want. What did they do every single day that you need to become great at? Do you need this skill?

What set yourself apart from the competition you were facing at the time? How has the landscape changed?”

  • Some fundamentals never go out of style. What are those? Do you already have these skills that you need to double down on? Awesome reflection spot to be in.

We’re so obsessed with the outcome that we forget to ask ourselves; what simple daily tasks do we need to become phenomenal at to live this life?

Friendly reminder to take a second and upgrade the chair you’re sitting in. As someone who loves to log long hours - sometimes a foldable chair won’t necessarily support that initiative. Next time - I’ll work on the cord game and get an office with windows in it.

Excited for the day I look back on this - a desk from a friend and a couple of laptops ✌🏼

BTS of Conversations > Applications recent upgrade

TL;DR

  • Stretch conversations change your trajectory

  • The angle of information is attractive

  • Focus on the vehicle (skill/behavior) that took people places

Before you leave…

If you’ve enjoyed this, send it over to another professional. The goal is to equip people to build a career they enjoy showing up to!

I’m excited to hear about the questions you’re asking.
