Why recruiters respect specific candidates—3 ways to show exactly what you’re looking for
It’s amazing if you’re going to networking events, having conversations with people in the role you want, and leveraging your existing community. However, there’s one piece that’ll make all of these efforts fall short - not knowing where you’re headed.
Say you’re hiring for a new role… Do you rock with the candidate who gives you the specifics of what they’re interested in, what they solve, and where they’ve been?
Or, do you go with the person that wants to try out a few different things?
You’re going with a specific person. How do you show this?
1) Craft the 3-4 sentence narrative.
- What do you enjoy doing?
- Where are you going?
- What pain points are you known for solving?
Ps) Record yourself saying this outloud and listen back
2) Point to all the research and people
- Explain that you’ve spent time discussing with A,B, and C as well as creating solutions for the pain points their experiencing.
3) Be excited about it.
- Hopefully this goes without saying, but people who communciate the energy for the role and the solution to the problems become 10x more attractive to hiring teams.
Ps) If you’re still a little lost, test being specific. Go to a networking event or a conversation acting as if you know exactly what you want to do.
Bonus: You’d be surprised how many people are acting out there 😉
Questions for being specific about your next role…
“What am I known for?”
“Who do I enjoy solving problems for?”
“What can I talk about without a script for 10 minutes?”
“Who was the last people whose work genuinely caught my attention?”
Spend time with these alone and then go test in the market.

Ps) The post-it says - “Am I putting myself in good positions and creating the conditions for success?”… just a question that hit home this week.
