Is it time for a reset? ⏳

We can go months doing the same exact thing expecting different results in the hope for "consistency". While this is important, the work that you're doing day to day is equally important. Use this to reset where you're headed!

4 steps to reset your search

It's been 3-4 months with little results. There was an opportunity to interview in January and February, but now it's early July. And, there hasn't been an interview since. Motivation, momentum, and energy are out the window. However, you have still shown up regardless.

1) Run toward feedback

  • The people I work with are fortunate to hire a coach to ask them tough questions. Most aren't, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to find that. Seek someone who has the experience you want and won't sugarcoat it.

  • This won't be a close friend or family nor should you expect it to be. Heads up - this will be uncomfortable to find and I dare you for your only reply to the feedback to be, "You're right".

2) Level-set on expectations

  • This has helped me 10x personally and with coaching job seekers. Navigating a worthy professional career has never proven to be easy. The people I've looked up to never said it was easy. Finding a worthy role will be hard and if you're reading this right now, this could be one of the hardest parts. Here's a quick video on this note.

3) Hang a target role list on your bedroom door

  • Put everyone on notice. These are the roles I want, this is where I'm stretching, and this is where I believe I'm a slam dunk. As you move through the list, tickmark, make notes, and add in where needed. Printing this out and seeing it every day helps you continue the momentum

4) Go spend time with people in the role you want

  • Want to be a project manager? Cool, go talk to people doing it in the industry you want right now. Get a taste of what is happening in the market and the rooms that you currently aren't in right now. Again, this is an area to humble yourself and collect information to make moves off of.

Questions I'd ask to find momentum...

  • What pain points have come up over the last 3 months that you didn't expect?

  • What one skill do you wish you had strengthened before taking on the role?

  • Which departments/teams have you had the chance to work with?

  • Where do you see "industry experts" making mistakes currently?

  • What do you wish more people knew about the role?

Networking doesn't have to start with random people. Here are 3 places I'm going before heading to LinkedIn:

  1. College Alumni - who have the role I want and went to my university?

  2. Mutual friends - who could a friend introduce me to for a conversation?

  3. Organizations - where do I spend my time outside of work? Who do they know?

TL;DR

  • If you haven’t interviewed in 2 months, scroll back up and read.

  • Questions build momentum, you leave armed with information.

  • Random networking isn’t the answer to get you started, make it easy.

I hope these questions drive you towards fun conversations with people in the role you want. If you're getting started on LinkedIn or have been navigating the search for a while and are struggling, consider my #1 coaching product - Conversations > Applications.
