I don’t want to add more to your plate as a job seeker or professional, so quit filling out 5 applications per day and try out this. Should take no more than 3 minutes to read as I break this down!

Ps) if you don’t want to do it alone, I’m doing it live next month. Head to the bottom if you want to join me!

  1. Becoming a Top-Tier Candidate

  2. Questions to Build a Business Case

  3. #PrescribedByDx - Raw Thoughts

3 reasons a well-crafted business case turns you into a no-brainer hire (even in competitive fields):

What is a business case? A one-pager or understanding that you can grab attention with by showing the hiring team what the business will get when they bring you into the role.

1) Confidence Radiates

Imagine knowing what you bring to the table before you walk into the interview room? Nailing down a business case allows you to do so. Hirings teams are enamored by the confidence you bring to the table in whatever solution you present.

The solution almost doesn’t matter as much, they’re simply attracted to the fact that you are confident in carrying out what you say.

Bonus: You become a superior storyteller.

2) Competition Falls Short

Few people are doing this. And that should be enough of a reminder for you to invest a few hours in building this out. I’ve included a few questions for you to start filling this out, but as you go start to craft this story, simply think:

ā€œWhat does the business get from putting me in this role?ā€

Answer this consistently and you’ll create more options (job offers).

3) You Don’t Only Tell it Once

Spending time to do the work now is something you’ll look back on in 5 years.

ā€œWow, I used to do thatā€

You’ll carry this approach into projects, new jobs, and opportunities that light you on fire professionally/personally. Understanding how to do this in your career will continue to pay dividends and will compound if you stay in the same industry!

Questions I'd ask to build out the right business case…

  • What is the most common pain point I hear from people in this role?

  • When was the last time I spoke with someone in this role?

  • How are most companies addressing industry trends?

  • Where is there an opportunity to differentiate ourselves?

  • What are customers least expecting us to do?

  • What experience do I fall back to the post professionally?

When you’re building a business case for your next role or project, having your perspective is important, and being able to tell a story around it should be more important.

These questions help build a story that grabs attention. Prioritize this.

ā€œMake it workā€

There are moments we run into where pieces are out of our control. I’d argue, it’s not all that often, and we should take more ownership. Nevertheless, it happens and you’re faced with a choice.

Circle back later or ā€œmake it workā€

I always choose ā€œmake it workā€ and it’s changed my life. Conversations, projects, accomplishments, time with loved ones. ā€œMaking it workā€ has enabled all of those moments to happen and made me proud of what I’ve built.

So, for this one - I couldn’t travel to Bali for a marathon because my passport was being held up by immigration. It happens, I could have sat in my hotel room and complained or made it work.

I pulled up to the park with a backpack of water and gels, ran 26 laps, and made it work. S/o the coworkers who joined me for the last few miles, it was beautiful.

Cheers to many more moments of ā€œmaking it workā€ āœŒšŸ¼

TL;DR

  • Do it because others aren’t doing it.

  • Answer questions others don’t think about.

  • Focus on ā€œmaking it workā€ more often.

Before you go…

I’m hosting an event next month to help you position yourself as a top-tier candidate by building out a business case. Join me if you want to see it done live!
