Embracing The Ugly 24/7 🤷🏻‍♂️

Welcome to #PrescribedByDx
Hey! Thanks for reading this week and welcome if you recently got the free guide (Questions to Build Advocates and Win In Interviews)!
Take a read below (no more than 4 minutes) đź’ˇ
Below you’ll find…
An area you are already doing well
One piece of a job search strategy to tweak
How you could have fun this week in the job search
An area you are already doing well…
Being honest about the bad parts + what isn’t working.
I’ve spoken with 5+ job seekers over the last week and they aren’t holding back on how tough the market is treating them. And at the same time, they remain positive about the next steps.
The word “dialed” comes to mind. They’re dialed in on the steps they can take next to win, not the items that they can’t control.
You can control how much interview preparation you do. You can’t control how the interviewer feels that day.
Keep checking in on what you can and can’t control, a healthy reminder of where to just “let go”.
One piece of a job search strategy to tweak…
Give Up Job Applications
If you haven’t had any results in the last 10 job applications, give them up. Seriously, give it 5 days and go focus solely on talking with more people. The tweak here is to come from the below angles when trying to land these conversations:
I want to learn more about the work that you do
I need further information to decide if I’ll enjoy that
I’m not certain about my action steps, what would you do?
You aren’t trying to “pick their brain” or “grab them for 5 minutes”... you’re looking for information to make a change in the way you approach your career.
And in doing that, you turn the focus completely to them because they have what you want. People love to talk about themselves, don’t ever forget this.
An area where you could have fun this week…
Pretend you are in your dream interview, try to answer this question:
“What’s the business case of having me in this {role/industry/company}?”
Consistently iterating on this question throughout your career will make the interviews, 10-minute networking conversations, and answering the question, “What do you do?” much easier.
In fact, at some point, you won’t have to answer anymore because people will already be able to answer, “What’s {your name} known for?” without having to ask you.
People who can tell their life stories win more often than those who can’t.
Period.
Question for you in your career…
“Where am I willing to work relentlessly in a place where I'm already getting results?”
TL;DR
Stay “dialed” in on the next step
Control what you can control in the search
Change the angle of how you are “networking” with others
Find an activity that you’re willing to go ridiculously hard in
3. What I'm up to that month personally and professionally
Personally - I’m getting ready for a ton of travel coming up. I’ll be spending 6 weeks out of the country in the first quarter, which means squeezing in family time prior and inviting them to come where I can. I’m nervous and excited about all the travel. Planning to spend a week solo in Spain to which I’ve never done a solo trip (taking recommendations)!
Professionally - I’ve been letting more opportunities come to me and prioritizing showing up every single day. And, it’s worked. This past month I got the LinkedIn Top Voice nod from LinkedIn and it was cool to meet other top voices, listen to the LinkedIn head of community speak about the program, and grab some “clout” on a platform I spend way too much time on. Learned a ton in the first month of 2024, need to figure out a way to keep tracking it all!
I appreciate you taking the time to read this far! Have a day and respond here if you have any questions!
