  1. Job search or career-focused insight

  2. Example of what’s working for clients and job seekers I’ve met

  3. What is going on personally & professionally?

1. Job search or career-focused insight.

Leveraging the network that is already around you

This is one of the first places I go when meeting with clients, look around you - it doesn’t need to be your best friends but take inventory of all the people you’ve interacted with. A majority of them have professional lives that you know nothing about.

Go speak with them and learn.

To filter your audience, answer these:

1. Have they been where I want to go?

2. Do they have valuable experiences that I can learn from?

What might these people look like in your life right now?

An old sports coach that you enjoyed having, a boss that you hit off with who was connected with a local entrepreneur you admired, or even a friend of your parents who always made you wonder what they did for a living.

Start with what you have, not the 40,000 people on LinkedIn doing what you want.

Bonus: 4 questions that I would ask in that conversation…

  1. What about this role sets you on fire? If not this role, was there a prior role?

  2. What would you recommend someone consider before going down this path?

  3. When was the last time you had an opportunity to chase down a project you enjoyed?

  4. What does growth mean to you in this role and what are potential exit opportunities?

2. One example of what's working for my clients and job seekers I've met...

Cutting Out Distractions.

Do you spend too much time scrolling? Listening to the latest podcast episode? Does the TV in your bedroom keep grabbing your attention?

Distractions have been slowing my clients down and they’ve found success when they find a way to completely remove whatever that distraction is. This isn’t the easiest thing to do, you can’t necessarily remove a good friend who talks down about your search or a parent who has limited beliefs in what you should do.

With this, try to focus on what you can control to gain back efficiencies.

Question for you in the job search:

What do you need to cut out of your environment to grow fast?

TL;DR

  • Start with what you have, not 40,000 random people on Linkedin.

  • We’ll grow 10x faster if we’re willing to change the environment.

  • Ignore all the noise that other people bring to your search.

3. What I'm up to that month personally and professionally

  • Personally - I’m home for November enjoying the Cleveland cold and will be making a pit stop in Chicago for a couple of days before heading on down to Nashville for Thanksgiving. I recently just completed an Ironman 70.3 in Phoenix and it was pretty cool to have my parents fly out with me to support me. We had a blast and I wrapped up the week catching my favorite sports team in Seattle, not the outcome we were looking for from the Browns (per usual).

  • Professionally - I had the chance to talk with a couple of different business owners this week and it was cool to see how all view different parts of our journey. Whether it’s starting the first newsletter, coaching the 100th client, or making content for the week. We all come at it from a different angle. With clients over the last month, we’re seeing traction before the holidays as interviews are happening fast!
